Will compile a portfolio of lithographic drawings of distinguished writers and asks if Markham would object to being put in this book, besides Masefield, Lindsay and Frost. He his asking for a sitting which should not take longer than 3 hours.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
